CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Bryn drove home and hurriedly collected an old laptop and a change of clothes for Lukas. He was soon back on the road.

When he arrived at Jim Cousin’s shelter in Saltern-le-Fen, he went straight to the office to discuss the curfew with Jim. The last thing he wanted was for Lukas to get into trouble — this was such a good hiding place.

‘Nice lad. Quiet, and certainly no trouble.’ Jim grinned at Bryn. ‘Unlike some of my other residents!’

Jim was a tough-looking guy, stocky, with short greying hair, certainly no oil painting. The kids and other nomads he looked out for respected him enormously. He was an ex-con made good, which sometimes helped. No one messed with Jim. One warning, and then it was back on the street with no re-entry pass.

‘However, he goes out a lot, and from the little you told me about his history, that worries me a bit — for his safety I mean.’

It worried Bryn too. ‘I’ll talk to him.’ He wasn’t supposed to go roaming the streets. It wasn’t in the plan. ‘Look, Jim, I need him to help me with something, and we might miss lock-up time. Is that okay?’

‘I’d rather you didn’t say “lock-up,” but never mind. I’ll tell Marvin. He’s on duty this evening. He can let him back in.’

Bryn thanked him, then in a low voice, he said, ‘Nothing on the street grapevine about the murders in the Fenfleet area?’

‘Lots of gossip, but nothing I’d consider worth passing on, mate.’ Jim’s face clouded over. ‘One of those two women used to live here in Saltern, the one called Louise Farrier. She was a volunteer worker at my friend Artie’s place. He’s from the Baptist church, goes out every night with hot drinks and food for the homeless. Louise used to help him prepare the sandwiches and stuff. Nice girl, really good-hearted. I couldn’t believe it when I heard the name on the telly.’

‘I missed that, Jim. What did they say exactly?’

‘Oh, you know how cagey they are. They just said two women had been found dead in Fenfleet, at different addresses. Police were asking anyone who might have seen either of them earlier in the day to come forward. They said they didn’t yet know if the deaths were connected. They gave the names, and that was it.’

‘I guess that’s about the long and the short of it, Jim,’ said Bryn. ‘Do you think I could have this Artie bloke’s address? We need to build up a picture of Louise, and so far we haven’t found anyone who knew her.’

‘You’ll find him at the Saltern Baptist church on Ford Avenue. If he’s not there, someone’ll know where he is.’ Jim stood up. ‘Sorry to dash off, but I’ve got a new recruit to sort out. Your lad’s in room seven. It’s next door.’

‘Thanks, Jim. I really appreciate you taking him in.’

‘No problem, but don’t forget to tell him not to go wandering off without telling us where he’s going. Oh, and apart from tonight, remind him he’s still bound by the curfew.
